The Detroit Red Wings on Monday have announced the signing of their 2015 5th round pick, center Chase Pearson from Maine.
Pearson spent the last three seasons at Maine where he recorded 37 goals and 78 points in 107 games. Pearson registered 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points in 34 games this season and was Maine’s captain for the second season in a row.
Pearson’s contract will start at the beginning of next season and in the meantime he’ll be heading to Grand Rapids on an amateur tryout contract. Although Grand Rapids is crowded right now, coach Ben Simon has done a good job of working players into his rotation as he gets them back from Detroit or injury so there’s a chance Pearson could see some game action.
Pearson is the third Red Wings draft pick from the University of Maine hockey program to turn pro, with Jimmy Howard and former Red Wing Gustav Nyquist being the other two. He is also the third member of Detroit’s 2015 draft class to sign, joining Evgeny Svechnikov and Vili Saarijarvi.
