The Red Wings today announced the recall of right wing Givani Smith and quickly followed that up with the announcement that Justin Abdelkader will be out a minimum of three weeks.
Justin Abdelkader will be out a minimum of 3 weeks, per Blashill.
This will be Smith’s second recall and with Luke Glendening still out, Smith looks to be slated for more than just three games this time around. Just like with his previous recall, he was brought up as he’s well suited to fill Abdelkader’s physical fourth line role. Smith registered 3 points in 5 games after being sent back down to Grand Rapids.
On one hand, the Wings have already had to deal with several injuries and losing Abdelkader again is less than ideal. On the other, Givani Smith is only in his 2nd pro season and getting the opportunity he is already is big for his development.
