The Detroit Red Wings headed to TD Garden for game six of the preseason. The focus of the night was bound to be Filip Zadina, who needed a strong game to keep his chances of making the opening night roster alive.

Worth Mentioning…

  • The Wings came back despite going down 2-0
  • Dennis Cholowski scored his 2nd goal of the preseason
  • Filip Zadina scored the OT goal, which will be huge in the decision of whether or not he’ll start this season in Grand Rapids.
  • Jonathan Bernier started in net, making 21 saves on 23 shots. Certainly outperforming Howard, the Wings could look to him as the starting goaltender.
  • The young defense was very stout vs. a powerful Boston club. This speaks very highly of the Wings’ youth defensemen.
  • Boston was only allowed one powerplay goal on four chances – not bad considering the matchup of skill on display.
  • Detroit’s PP was important, going 2/6.
  • The Detroit victory puts the team at 6-0-0 for the preseason.

Final Thought

It’s doubtful we see Filip Zadina make this opening night roster. He simply hasn’t been able to adjust or keep up with the NHL play. Time in the AHL may do better for his own development. His game winner tonight helps his case, but he’ll need more than just this to convince Jeff Blashill.
The blossoming of Detroit’s young defensemen has been oh so sweet. Whether it be Libor Sulak, Dennis Cholowski or Filip Hronek, Wings fans have had their heads turned by a young gun on the back end.
Though the preseason counts for nothing, it’s exciting to see a winning, and in fact undefeated, Detroit team. This could provide confidence carrying into the regular season.
The Wings’ 7th preseason game will be Friday at 7:30 vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs.
