Red Wings win!
Maybe the most entertaining game of the preseason so far, the Wings put together a solid effort from start to finish, and some highlight reel worthy moments. Detroit’s expected top-line for the regular season cashed in on all three goals, as the trio of Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, and Tyler Bertuzzi were buzzing all night. A great sign to see, as those three finished the 2018-19 season red-hot.
Madison Bowey also had a big day, registering the game winning goal in overtime, and adding two assists. Thanks to his nifty one-timer, the Wings were able to walk away with a 3-2 victory.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • I thought Detroit played a very aggressive game. Many of the forwards were finishing their checks and really got their hands dirty. You’ve got to love that kind of effort, establishing their identity early on.
  • The scoring got going on a somewhat bizarre play. Bowey’s shot would be off target, but luckily deflected off Bertuzzi and toward the net mouth. Mantha then forced Jack Johnson to put it in his own net. Bertuzzi would get credit for the goal, but Mantha was the real reason that puck found the back of the net.
  • Fortunately, Mantha would find his way into the goal column, with an absolute bomb to beat the goaltender. The man has a family, Anthony!
  • Dylan Larkin made his preseason debut in this one and you could see a bit of rust in his play, most notably a mishandled of the puck on a breakaway. But for the most part he was his normal self and created some quality chances for his teammates.
  • Speaking of Larkin creating quality scoring chances for his teammates, he worked his magic in overtime and would find Bowey in the slot and the rest is history.

Better luck next time, Pittsburgh!

Motor City MVP

Anthony Mantha

The clear Motor City MVP of tonight was Anthony Mantha. Not only did the Frenchman notch a goal (really scored two), but he generated a plethora of other golden opportunities. On two separate occasions he was robbed by the Penguins’ netminder.
This is the version of Mantha the Wings want to see over a consistent basis. When he is on, he is ON. This has been the story with Mantha for years. He’ll need to keep his foot on the gas and carry over this momentum into the regular season.
