The Detroit Red Wings closed out their home-and-home series against the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday at United Center, losing 2-1.

After dictating the play for most of the first period, the Red Wings broke through on the power play with three of the standouts from the recent Prospect Tournament. Filip Zadina‘s shot deflected off Brent Seabrook right to Taro Hirose, who buried the rebound to put Detroit up 1-0. Joe Veleno also got an assist on the play.

Early in the second period, the Blackhawks tied the game, after Jonathan Bernier misplayed a puck behind the net, giving Brandon Hagel an opportunity to stuff the loose puck behind Bernier.

About midway through the second, Duncan Keith rocketed a shot past Filip Larsson to put the Blackhawks up 2-1.

As a team, the Red Wings got absolutely shellacked, losing the possession battle 53-31 at 5 on 5 (68.18%). However, it is preseason after all, and the Red Wings had no Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi or Andreas Athanasiou. Essentially, they iced a lot of prospects and AHL vets.

Hirose, Veleno, Zadina and Moritz Seider had strong games despite losing the possession battle. Veleno had a few quality scoring chances, and Seider looked poised and confident in himself.

It’s reassuring to see the youngsters fare well against a pretty stacked preseason Blackhawks lineup that featured Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Brandon Saad, Keith and Corey Crawford. Yes, they will have to limit the shots against, but allowing just two goals against that lineup is a win for the Red Wings.
