After a much needed win against the the raining Eastern Conference champs in Boston, the Wings looked to keep the momentum going against the 9-6-3 Golden Knights. Bernier was back in net after a great performance Friday with Hirose scratched for the 2nd consecutive game.
The shot clock was low during this one with lots of back and forth action between both teams. But it’s Detroit that broke through during the third period with 2 late goals to secure their first back to back wins since the start of the season.

Thoughts & Highlights

  • Marchessault opened the scoring late in the first period after a turnover from Cholowski leads to a 2-on-1. Cholowski’s incomplete pass and Hronek not stretching his stick into the lane puts Vegas on top.
  • Thankfully, Athanasiou gets another much needed goal. With less than a minute to go in the frame, he fires it from the dot during a power play to tie the game up with helpers from Green and Hronek.

  • However it’s Vegas who regains the lead midway through the second. An odd man rush for the Knights lets Pacioretty take a perfect timed shot that gets passed Bernier.
  • It’s Madison Bowey who not only ties the game, but keeps the majority of Wings fans awake in this one. With less than 9 minutes to go, he earns his first goal of the season – scoring miraculously after being tripped as the puck gets through while he’s falling down.
  • The Wings made us hold out for a hero on this one. His name is Anthony Mantha. With 31 seconds left in regulation, he beats Subban with his shot and gives Detroit their win.
  • Fabbri had another good game, earning an assist on Mantha’s goal. Athanasiou heating up is a good sign for the offensive direction this team needs to take.
  • I would have liked to see the Wings convert more on their high danger scoring chances during this low shot game. But Mantha has temporarily made me put those complaints on the back burner.
  • Detroit came into this game with the worst penalty kill in the league, so killing off the 2 penalties they took is huge.

When there’s 5 combined shots in the second but Bowey and Mantha start scoring in the third.

Motor City MVP

Of course its Big Mo. He puts the Man in Mantha. He’s got 11 goals in 19 games and the game winner in dramatic fashion. 40 goals seems very likely. Need I say more?
