Wings postgame: The winning streak hits 3

5 years agoThe Detroit Red Wings hosted the New Jersey Devils, looking to extend their seasonlong two-game winning streak. The Red Wings did just that, winning 4-3 on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, extending the winning streak to three games and blessing us all with curly fries yet again.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Red Wings’ power play continues to hum, as Martin Frk notched his first goal of the season with a hard slapper that Cory Schneider got a piece of. Detroit cycled the puck behind the net and had good movement on the outside before Mike Green found an open Frk.
- Luke Glendening and Mirco Mueller got into a scrap near the end of the second period. Mueller gave Glendening a couple of cross checks, and Glendening threw off his glove and connected with a couple of swings until Mueller was face first on the ice.
- Michael Rasmussen picked up his second goal of the season, once again on the power play. He knocked in a rebound right in front of Schneider off of a Gustav Nyquist shot.
- Dennis Cholowski continues to impress with veteran-like awareness. He got the secondary assist on the Rasmussen goal, which was a quick cross-ice feed in between defenders.
- Justin Abdelkader and Glendening combined for a short-handed goal. On a 2-on-1, Glendening fired a shot, and Abdelkader picked up the rebound to notch the Red Wings’ third short-handed goal of the season.
- Trevor Daley iced the game with a long-range empty-net trick shot short-handed goal.
FINAL THOUGHT
This was a really solid effort by the Red Wings. Despite not scoring a goal at even strength, they won the shot share battle (45-36) at 5 on 5 and looked competitive against the Devils.
They fell behind 2-1 early in the third period but were able to take claw their way back in thanks to special teams.
Ideally, you’d like to see more goals scored at 5 on 5, but this team will no doubt take any win it can get.
