Wings Postgame: The Leafs Are…Actually Good?

After an exciting Centennial Classic, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings met for the second time this season. It wasn’t as good of a game for the Wings though, as they fell 4-0 to extend their losing streak to four games.

THE RUNDOWN

Much like the first period in the Centennial Classic, this game’s was a snore fest. However, unlike the Centennial Classic, something actually did happen, as the Leafs opened the scoring six minutes in with a goal from some rookie named Auston Matthews, thanks to a panic play from Jonathan Ericsson. Other than that, not much. Anthony Mantha hit the post once, but that was it.

The second period picked up the pace a little bit, but unfortunately for the Wings, it was more in the Leafs favour. But, the Red Wings held up their own, and kept the Leafs from making it 2-0. That is, until five minutes left in the second, when Roman Polak blasted the puck off of Ericsson’s leg and in.
The Wings picked up a bit more steam in the third, trying to come back from a two goal deficit. They went back and forth with the Leafs and put up a couple of really good chances. However, this effort didn’t last long, as a bit over four minutes in, James van Riemsdyk displayed his hands in close yet again, and back handed the puck past Mrazek off the cross bar and in to make it 3-0. But remember last time, when the Leafs had a three goal lead and they ble-oh, Soshnikov just scored. Never mind. 4-0 Leafs.

THE STATS

It was a relatively even game for the Wings, despite the score, although score effects were probably in play. Which makes it worse for the Wings, because those score effects caused it to be even still.

MOTOR CITY MVP

The MVP goes to Jonathan Ericsson, contributing to two goals for the other team.

NEXT GAME

The Wings are off for the rest of the All-Star break, and get back to it on Tuesday at 7:30 against New Jersey. The game will be broadcasted on the usual stations, and your boy Brock Seguin will be at it with the pregame in the early morning.
