Well that was fun! Those who decided not to stay up late missed out on a good one, as the Red Wings came back from a two goal defect in the third period, going on to win the game in overtime. Late goals from Andreas Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin helped spark the team, and Dennis Cholowski was the ultimate hero in sudden death.
The Red Wings have now won three games in a row. You can see the difference in confidence they are playing with, which will be huge moving forward.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • Brendan Perlini had a standout first period. The newest Red Wing put up three shots in the first frame and was a consistent threat throughout.
  • Towards the tail end of the first period is when things really started to get chippy. Ryan Getzlaf and Anthony Mantha got into a confrontation and Getzlaf was not happy, to say the least. The Anaheim captain gave Mantha two sturdy slashes that erupted the rest of the Red Wings. Dylan McIlrath came crashing in to defend the Detroit star winger.
  • On the faceoff directly after the previously mentioned scrum, Givani Smith dropped the gloves with Nicholas Deslauriers to rile things up. Smith ended up on the losing end of that tilt, but it was nice to see the rookie get involved in the heat of the action.
  • Detroit’s first goal came courtesy of Filip Hronek. The second year D-man scored off a clapper from the left circle, a very similar tally from an earlier contest against Anaheim.
  • As the Wings trailed 3-1 in the third period, they were in need of some jump. They got that, thanks to a deflection goal from Athanasiou. Its nice to see Double-A finally start to get rewarded for the chances he is generating.
  • The Ducks took two costly penalties in the final two minutes. After a goalie pull, the Red Wings had a 6-on-3 advantage while down by one. After a few tries they eventually found the equalizer — Dylan Larkin pouncing on a rebound from the side of the net. Tie game with 37 seconds left!
  • Finally, in overtime, Robby Fabbri held off a check to find a streaky Cholowski who made no mistake. This wrist shot from Cholowski sealed the deal, winning the game 4-3.
  • Fabbri now has 4 points in 3 games with the Red Wings. His great play in the neutral zone was the key to the winning goal. The trade is looking better and better by the day.

Hey Anaheim…

Motor City MVP

Dylan Larkin

Larkin had a strong game overall. The biggest highlight of the night — obviously — was the tying goal with under a minute to play. It was a clutch moment, one that will stick on his highlight reel for a long, long time.
