The Detroit Red Wings returned to the friendly confines of Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, looking to extend their five-game point streak. However, another second-period meltdown meant a six-game point streak will have to wait for another day, as the Red Wings fell to the Ottawa Senators 4-3.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • Filip Hronek returned to the lineup after missing the past two games. He assisted on Robby Fabbri‘s goal and Anthony Mantha‘s goal.
  • Three second-period goals doomed the Red Wings yet again, as the Senators won the shot share battle (73.08% at 5 on 5).
  • Anthony Duclair scored just three minutes into the game, beating Jonathan Bernier on a filthy deke off a nice long flip from Thomas Chabot.
  • Hronek appeared to tie the game just 30 seconds later, but the Senators challenged for offside, and Tyler Bertuzzi did indeed enter the zone just a tad early.
  • However, Fabbri continued his hot pace, tying the game at 1-1.
  • The Red Wings took a 2-1 lead into the second period, but two Senators goals (Duclair and Jean-Gabriel Pageau) within one minute of each other saw the lead disappear six minutes into the frame.
  • The second-period onslaught continued for the Senators, as a streaking Duclair found Brady Tkachuk in front of the net, who jammed the puck under Bernier’s pad to take a 4-2 lead.
  • In the third period, the Red Wings didn’t allow a shot on goal until there was five minutes remaining.
  • Mantha cut the lead to 4-3 with a nice wrister.

Gif of the Game

Another game, another second-period meltdown. The Red Wings have been outscored 38-19 in the second period this season.

Motor City MVP

Robby Fabbri

The trade continues to look better and better for general manager Steve Yzerman. Fabbri now has three goals and four assists in six games for the Red Wings. His presence has given the second line a viable scoring threat, which takes some of the pressure off the top line to score every game.
