The Red Wings and Rangers always have entertaining match-ups. Tonight was no different, as both teams put up strong performances and ultimately, the game was decided by goaltending — it always seems to be that way with these two original six franchises.
Despite Dylan Larkin and Mike Green being out with injury, Detroit managed to set their season high in shots. After a thrilling overtime, the Wings found a way to win 3-2 in the shootout. Andreas Athanasiou was without question the star of the game.

The highlights

  • Before puck drop the Red Wings honored the life of hall-of-famer Ted Lindsay who passed away on Monday. Through out the night, the hockey icon was celebrated and remembered for his legendary life on and off the ice.
  • The Rangers broke the ice in the first period when Pavel Buchnevich collected his own rebound and caught Jimmy Howard out of position for an open net.
  • The Red Wings tied things up in the second period when Tyler Bertuzzi deflected Madison Bowey’s point shot. Bertuzzi now has 16 goals and counting on the season.
  • Bowey, who was acquired at the trade deadline for Nick Jensen, picks up his first point as a member of the Red Wings with his assist on Bertuzzi’s goal.
  • Athanasiou found the back of the net later on. His goal celebration featured a touching tribute to Mr. Lindsay.
  • The Rangers tied the game late in the third, forcing overtime. Detroit utterly dominated OT with many great scoring chances from Athnasiou, Anthony Mantha, and Filip Zadina.
  • Athanasiou would go on to score the shootout goal, clinching the second point and snapping and eight game losing streak.

Final Thoughts

This was much more than a pride win for the rebuilding Wings. There young stars stepped up big in the absence of Larkin. Continuing to play center AA played arguably the best game of his career, Bertuzzi was everywhere, and Zadina flashed his offensive skill.
A huge win with many, many positives to take away from.
