WINGS POSTGAME: Lightning storm back for 15th straight win against Red Wings

5 years agoAfter nearly completing the comeback against the Tampa Bay Lightning last Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings got a chance for revenge Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. However, the Lightning completed their own comeback, erasing a 3-0 deficit and extending their winning streak against the Red Wings to 15 games in a 5-4 win.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- Detroit got on the scoreboard within the first three minutes, as Madison Bowey scored his first goal as a Red Wing, a point shot that beat Andrei Vasilevskiy.
- About midway through the first period, Darren Helm sprung a 2-on-1 during a penalty kill and beat Vasilevskiy five-hole for the 2-0 lead and his 100th career goal.
- Early in the second period, Justin Abdelkader scored his first goal in 41 games on a nice power move.
- With about seven minutes left in the second period, Steven Stamkos broke the shutout on a nice short-side wrister that beat Jimmy Howard.
- Early in the third period, the Lightning cut the deficit to 3-2, as Brayden Point got a second-chance shot past Howard.
- About midway through the third period, Nikita Kucherov scored four seconds into a power play to tie the game at 3-3.
- Just 26 seconds later, Tyler Johnson deflected a point shot to give the Lightning their first lead of the game at 4-3.
- Kucherov added a fifth goal with about three minutes left in the third; it ended up being the game-winning goal.
- Michael Rasmussen scored with less than two minutes left to cut the Lightning lead to 5-4.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Really, the Red Wings got a bit lucky to even have a 3-0 lead. A low-percentage shot from Bowey and a couple of breakaways were the difference early. The expected goals numbers even while the Red Wings had a 3-0 lead suggested they would not hold the lead.
