WINGS POSTGAME: Howard comes up big in milestone night
By Cameron Kuom
5 years agoAtlantic division foes the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators met for the fourth time this season tonight. While neither of these teams are exactly star-studded, it was a very entertaining game to watch, highlighted by a two goal effort by Andreas Athanasiou and Jimmy Howard playing in 500th career game.
Detroit found a way to win 3-2 on Howard’s big night.
Worth Mentioning
- Athansiou played a very strong first period. He broke the ice with a beautiful goal. His 19th of the season sets a new career high for him.
- Athanasiou struck again on a penalty shot. He won the mind get with the goaltender, this time going five hole instead of making a move.
- Here’s an interesting stat. This was Athanasiou’s second career penalty shot goal, which is tied for second most all-time in Red Wings history. Steve Yzerman holds the franchise record with three.
- The Sens managed to tie the game at two, but a great takeaway by Darren Helm lead to a glorious change by Frans Nielsen and he made no mistake. Making it 3-2 Wings, the eventual game winning goal.
- A little nostalgia for Red Wings fans occurred in the third period when Niklas Kronwall laid a big open ice hit. Quite simply known as getting “Kron-WALLED”.
Final Thoughts
Jimmy Howard was the star tonight. He made 40 saves to steal a game for the Wings, just like he has done all year. In his 500th career game, he is making it very difficult for management to move on from the long-term Red Wing at the NHL trade deadline.
