WINGS POSTGAME: Fabbri’s pair of goals leads Detroit to much needed feel good win

4 years agoFor a Red Wings team that sits at the very bottom of league standings, going into a matchup with the 11-2-2 Boston Bruins did not appear to be a worthwhile challenge. Man did they step up and answer the bell. The Red Wings didn’t look out of place against the reigning Eastern Conference champions.
In a pleasant surprise, they were pushed to a 4-2 victory thanks to a pair of goals from newly acquired Robby Fabbri. Fabbri, in his Red Wings debut, potted both his goals on the powerplay. His immediate success provided a memorable moment, one that comes in a season full of forgettable ones. That means a lot.
Thoughts and Highlights
- Dylan Larkin opened up the scoring for Detroit with some good fortune. The top-line center went for the wrap-around, but ultimately scored with the puck deflecting off a Bruin skate.
- Fabbri’s first of the night came off a great feed from Tyler Bertuzzi. The Guelph Storm connection was strong tonight.
- Fabbri followed that up with another powerplay marker. The goal looked nearly identical to his first one.
- Brendan Perlini wanted to get in on the action of scoring your first goal as a Red Wing. On a later powerplay he was stoned by Tuukka Rask out in front, after a highly skilled pass from Andreas Athanasiou.
- Jonathan Bernier had a hell of a night. He absolutely robbed David Pastrnak in the second period to preserve the lead. He also had two assists, which is a fun little note from an equally fun game.
- As you would expect, Brad Marchand stuck his nose in unwanted places all throughout the game. His antics eventually became too much for Filip Hronek, who dropped the gloves with the noted pest.
- Anthony Mantha put the dagger in with a highlight reel empty net goal. Mantha really stepped up in the third period as a whole.

While Fabbri will grab the headlines, deservedly, Detroit’s best player was Bertuzzi. He set up both of Fabbri’s goals on the powerplay, the first of which was mightily impressive. He was buzzing all games, making those skill plays as well as getting in the dirty areas. Bertuzzi really embodies the perfect hockey player. He’s everything you want. Heck of a player.
