WINGS POSTGAME: Blue Jackets outlast Red Wings in goal fest

5 years agoThe Detroit Red Wings clawed their back from an early deficit but couldn’t quite catch the Columbus Blue Jackets, as they lost 7-5, extending the losing streak to three games Monday night at Little Caesars Arena.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- Josh Anderson, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Artemi Panarin scored the Blue Jackets’ three goals in the first period. The Blue Jackets led 16-10 in shots.
- The Red Wings cut the Blue Jacket’s lead early in the second period, off of a nice Gustav Nyquist deflection.
- The two-goal deficit was short-lived, as Markus Nutivaara‘s slapper from the blue line gave the Blue Jackets a 4-1 lead less than five minutes later.
- After Boone Jenner made it 5-1, Mike Green intercepted a pass in the offensive zone and beat Sergei Bobrovsky over the glove to make it 5-2 about midway through the second period.
- Near the end of the second, Dennis Cholowski‘s power-play goal cut the deficit to 5-3 on a big slapper from the top of the circles.
- In the third, the Red Wings continued to claw their way back into the game, as Dylan Larkin made a nice drop pass to Anthony Mantha, who wristed a shot past Bobrovsky.
- Dubois made it 6-4 about three minutes later. Jonathan Bernier made the first save, but Dubois popped in the rebound despite a referee initially ruling the play dead.
- Mantha cut the deficit to 6-5 with 2:12 to go, beating a defender on the right side and wristing one past Bobrovsky.
- The Blue Jackets added an empty-net goal to secure the win.
FINAL THOUGHT
The Red Wings showed some fight after going down 3-0 and 5-1, but the Blue Jackets’ lead was too much for Detroit to overcome. It’s nice to see this team fight its way back into games, but constantly playing from behind — not to mention 18 giveaways — isn’t a recipe for success.
