Wings Postgame: Aren’t You a Little Bad for a Hockey Team?

After a Christmas break, the Red Wings are back at it. And what better way to get a win streak started then by facing the Buffalo Sabres, the only team in the Atlantic lower than them. Easy win. Well, easier said than done, as the Wings dropped the game 4-3.

THE RUNDOWN

It didn’t start off well for the Wings, as Evander Kane scored the opener for Buffalo seven minutes in, and then Same Reinhart followed with five minutes left via a tip in on the powerplay.
Wait, what’s that? A cry for help?
Have no fear, Hank Zoinkerberg is here.

Zetterberg draws the team within one…for about 22 seconds, and then Jack Eichel wires an amazing shot past Peter to give the Sabres their two goal lead back. But that didn’t last long either, as Drew Miller responded a 1:06 later with a goal of his own, burying home Dylan Larkin’s dirty garbage in front of the net. EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING!!!
Things calmed down in the third a bit, until Thomas Vanek scored six minutes in to tie the game for Detroit with a snipe on the powerplay.

But, that happiness didn’t last long, as Kane scored his second of the night almost two minutes later, and that would be it. The Wings fought valiantly, but couldn’t muster the tying goal, losing 4-3.

MOTOR CITY MVP

Despite the loss, Vanek had a solid game, with a goal, and he was possessing the puck, with a solid 70.97% CF%. He looked impressive, and continues to show why he was a great depth signing. He’s been one of the few “bright spots” in an otherwise dark season.

UP NEXT

The Red Wings look to rebound on Thursday against the Senators, who are this years team that outperforms their terrible numbers, one of the few teams worse than the Wings.
