WINGS POSTGAME: Another blown lead

5 years agoThe Detroit Red Wings snapped their six-game losing streak on Friday and were looking to build on a dramatic overtime win Sunday night against the Washington Capitals. However, the defending Stanley Cup champions took this one, winning 3-2 at Little Caesars Arena.
Highlights
- Michael Rasmussen did not play due to a lower-body injury. Christoffer Ehn slotted in on the fourth line.
- The Capitals got on the scoreboard first — after a scramble in front of the net, the puck found itself on Tom Wilson‘s stick, who beat Jimmy Howard.
- Anthony Mantha tied the game late in the first period. After a giveaway in the neutral zone, he broke into the offensive zone with speed, made a move on Braden Holtby to open his legs and tucked the puck five-hole.
- The Red Wings took the lead about midway through the second period — an excellent tic-tac-toe play by Gustav Nyquist, Dylan Larkin and Filip Hronek.
- About midway through the third period, Travis Boyd scored on a nice feed from Alexander Ovechkin to tie the game at 2-2.
- Late in the third period, a blue-line wrister from Michal Kempny found its way past Howard to put the Capitals up 3-2.
Final Thoughts
The power play continues to disappoint. The Red Wings had three opportunities and had just two shots. Not good enough against the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Detroit also held about half of the possession battle, until the third when Washington took control.
The Red Wings had a lead heading into the third period but, again, were unable to close out the game. They have been pretty solid when leading after two periods, with an 8-1-3 record this season.
