WINGS POST-GAME: Red Wings spoil Nylander’s debut in 5-4 win

5 years agoMuch hype surrounded this original-6 match-up in what was the season debut for William Nylander. The Red Wings weren’t having any of it, giving Toronto a good run for their money. Despite a rough third period in which they blew a three goal lead, it was all around solid effort from all areas of the depth chart, helping Detroit play spoiler, winning 5-4 in overtime against their Canadian rival.
Worth Mentioning
- This game was off and running right from puck drop. Toronto struck first, but the Wings quickly responded with back-to-back goals, courtesy of noted goal scorers Jonathan Ericsson and Luke Glendening.
- In the last-minute of the first period, while on a delayed penalty, Dylan Larkin worked his magic to get a cross ice pass to Gustav Nyquist. Nyquist noticed goaltender Garret Sparks in bad position and took advantage.
- Mike Green made it 4-1 later on. Right after their power-play expired he put a 50 ft. floater on net and it some how found the back of the net.
- The inevitable happened because we can’t have nice things. Toronto came in waves and rattled off three straight goals to tie the game in the third period.
- In the final ten seconds Nick Jensen nearly cinched the dagger. His point shot hit both posts and still stayed out of the net.
- The night was redeemed in overtime when Nyquist sent Larkin on a breakaway to seal the deal and give the Wings 2 points.
- Nyquist tallied 3 points tonight. Thats 10 in his last 5 games. He has easily been the Wings best player over the last handful of games.
Final Thoughts
The Red Wings avoided disaster tonight. If they failed to come away without a victory after leading 4-1, against a hated opponent in the Leafs, that would not have bode well with the fans. Instead they managed to salvage a valiant effort and make this one of the most entertaining games of the season.
