Dropping their last six games, the Red Wings came into tonights contest in desperate need of a win. Not for the two points but for the confidence. Against one of the league’s best teams in the Nashville Predators they found a way, winning 4-3 in overtime.

Worth Mentioning

  • The Wings opened with a strong period, out-shooting Nashville 14-6. Despite the shot count the Preds score first off a point shot from P.K. Subban.
  •  It was a very chippy first 20 minutes. Luke Witkowski and Austin Watson had a fight, for fun more than anything, but it slowly became more serious. Specifically when Watson hit a helmet-less Justin Abdelkader into the glass.
  • Nashville scored again in the second period. The Wings with a pair of goals right after to even the game up at two.
  • The first from a thrilling goal from Andreas Athanasiou. When it look like the puck was out of reach, Double-A turned on the after burners and went top shelf off the backhand.
  • The next one game from Thomas Vanek. The puck came right to him off the end boards and he buried it.
  • This was a special moment for Vanek; playing in game 1,000 of his NHL career – the first Austrian-born player to do so.
  • Moments after Nashville almost reclaimed the lead but a goaltender interference call took away what would have been the 3-2 goal. Also, I still don’t know what goaltender interference is.
  • The explanation for the no goal can be found here.
  • In the third period Tyler Bertuzzi gave the Wings the lead off a sweet pass by Gustav Nyquist. Bertuzzi’s first goal in 15 games.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t have nice things. The Predators tied the game with under two minutes to go.
  • In overtime the team got it done. After a lackluster 4-on-3 powerplay, Dylan Larkin did Dylan Larkin things and scored his league leading 4th overtime goal of the season.

Final Thoughts

This was one of the Wings better performances over the recent stretch of games. They are at a point of the year where the season is becoming lost but to still come out with some fire has to be pleasing to see.
