WINGS POST-GAME: Penalty Shanks

5 years agoThe Red Wings were in Canada’s capital Thursday night to take on their division foes, the Ottawa Senators. Detroit was on a four game winning streak heading into this match-up. However, the drive for five came up short with the Wings falling 2-1 to the Senators. The story of the game was two penalty shots in the third period that Detroit failed to convert on. A missed opportunity to at very least, tie the game.
Worth Mentioning
- Justin Abdelkader had an eventful first period. He dropped the gloves with rookie Brady Tkachuk, took a big hit, and had a grade-A scoring chance.
- Michael Rasmussen got his named on the score sheet after deflecting Mike Green’s point shot. This was Rasmussen first career goal at 5-on-5, and his 4th overall.
- Ottawa also tallied a goal in the first. A bad rebound by Jimmy Howard lead to Cody Ceci’s 3rd goal of the season. Before that Ottawa had a goal called back due to goaltender interference.
- Drake Batherson scored his first NHL goal. While Red Wings fans may not like it, it was a cool moment, as his family was in attendance for the milestone.
- The Wings had back-to-back penalty shots in the third. The first coming from Andreas Athanasiou, whose backhand-forehand move wasn’t fooling Craig Anderson at all. Michael Rasmussen had the second opportunity. Attempting to go five-hole, Anderson wasn’t having any of it.
Final Thoughts
Detroit had two great chances to tie up the game. The two missed penalty shots will leave a sour taste in the mouth, especially with this being one of Detroit’s better played games of the season.
Detroit’s next outing will be against the New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. EST.
