The Red Wings and Canadiens face off one last time at the Joe Louis Arena.

The Rundown

The first period was evenly matched through the first ten minutes, with the Wings and Canadiens going back and forth with the puck. Petr Mrazek had some amazing saves. The save of the game came against former Red Wing, Alternate Captain Steve Ott when Mrazek deflected the puck off his stick, then was crash tackled by Alex Galchenyuk. Frans Nielsen gave the Wings the lead with a deke backhand against Charlie Linddgren. The Wings dominated in the second half of the period.
The Canadiens were the more dominant team in the second tying the score at 15:141, Nathan Beaulieu slap shot from the point on a power play. The score stayed tied for another 7 minutes until Dylan Larkin assisted by  Tomas Tatar and Matt Lorito (first point in the NHL) scored. The Red Wings were still being dominated by the Montreal Canadiens and couldn’t hold onto the lead, Artturi Lehkonen tied the game with 1:30 left in the second. Interestingly the period ended with Brian Flynn ‘accidentally’ nearly decapitating Matt Lorito.
Period 3 was uneventful, no goals or penalties for either team. Riley Sheahan had a good scoring chance but as usual missed the net by a wide margin. With a tied game at the end of the third, they head to overtime.
Montreal wins the game in overtime. Mike Green over skates the puck and has it picked up by Nikita Nesterov who passes to Alex Galchenyuk to score the game winning goal.

The Stats

alt
The game was pretty even in the stats but the Wings couldn’t capitalise on any of their chances.

Motor City MVP

As this game was pretty blah in outstanding players, I am going to give MVP cheekily to Riley Sheahan who is the first NHL forward to not score with 100+ shots in a season. And realistically he probably won’t score tomorrow.

Up Next

The Red Wings play their final game in Joe Louis Arena against the New Jersey Devils. The Red Wings will be holding a farewell to the Joe ceremony before the game. You can watch the game on SN1, FS-D and MSG+2. As usual pre-game will be up tomorrow. Let’s hope the Red Wings put on a good show to give the Joe a proper farewell.
