Worth Mentioning

• The Wings got on the board first. On the powerplay Dylan Larkin slipped the puck from the slot to Gustav Nyquist who made no mistake. Nyquist picks up his 9th goal of the year.

• Larkin’s assist on the goal brings his point streak up to 7 games. He has 10 points in that span.
• The Islanders responded with a goal off an odd man rush. Mat Barzal made a fantastic play to set up the goal and flying though the neutral zone.
• If you read the pregame from earlier today, you’ll have seen that I said containing Barzal would need to be a priority to win this game. *Narrator*: they didn’t.
• With seconds to go in the period the Wings reclaimed the lead. Trevor Daley stepped up in the offensive zone and poked in his own rebound, just making it over the goal-line.

•  The Wings ended up getting into some serious penalty trouble. They were penalized 6 straight times and while some may call for the referee’s head, the team should have understood this was an officiating group that will call a lot. They didn’t clean up their act and found themselves constantly killing penalties.
• The penalty kill did as much as they could. They killed off the first five penalties, but as you would expect, killing penalties takes away from your offensive zone time. They were severely out-shot, 48-19 to be exact.
• Eventually the Islanders capitalized. That Barzal guy tied the game on their 6th powerplay opportunity. Shortly after Casey Cizikas gave them the lead.
• When all hoped seemed lost the Wings found a way. A sweet read by Andreas Athanasiou found Thomas Vanek for a tap-in with under two minutes left to tie the game. Vanek registered a point on every goal by the Wings.

• After a thrilling overtime the game would be decided in a shootout. Barzal scored the lone goal to give the Islanders the win.
• Despite the loss Jonathan Bernier had maybe his best performance of the year. He made 45 saves and kept the team alive for the entire game.
