WINGS POST-GAME: Different Game, Same Result

5 years agoThe Red Wings were back in action against the star-studded Winnipeg Jets with hopes of pulling off the upset. Spoiler: they did not. Instead, Winnipeg claimed the 2-1 win over Detroit, as the Wings remain dead-last in the standings. On the positive side Mike Green made his season, as well as Jacob de la Rose, who was claimed off waivers last week.
Worth Mentioning
- The Wings actually looked pretty decent to open up this game. No, like, seriously. They out-shot Winnipeg 14-9 in the first period and didn’t look over-matched by a much more talented Jets team.
- Andreas Athanasiou overall had a phenomenal night – arguably the Wings best player. He had 6 shots on goal and looked very dangerous with his speed. His started off his brilliant performance with an early power-play goal.
- Dennis Cholowski picked up an assist on the goal. He is now up to 6 points in 8 games, and beginning to creep his way into the Calder Trophy discussion.
- All the Wings first period good doings were completely erased in the second. The Jets dominated throughout the entire 20 minute frame, outshooting Detroit 21-4. Jimmy Howard came up huge, only allowing one goal during the parade of shots, including this nasty glove-hand snag off a redirect.
- Penalties once again were a major issue. Detroit had ten minutes in penalties which really hurt their ability to garner any momentum. This allowed the Jets to keep coming and eventually take a 2-1 lead.
Final Thoughts
It’s the same old story once again.
Penalties. Finding success on the power-play. Dennis Cholowski doing Dennis Cholowski things. The majority of the team going invisible for about 30 minutes. Create false hope with a late game push. Rinse and repeat.
This has been the narrative all year. It doesn’t seem as if any thing is changes in how they prep for games. The same mistakes and blunders are still being made.
