Coming off their first win of the season, the Red Wings came into tonight’s match-up against the up-start Carolina Hurricanes. Detroit failed to continue off the momentum from last game, being outplayed for the majority of the game. Carolina has built up a reputation of being corsi kings, averaging 42 shots per game, and that was no different tonight. The Hurricanes won 3-1 and they should have had a few more.

Worth Mentioning

  • The goaltending duo feature the former tandem of Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek. This was only Mrazek’s second time facing the Red Wings since being dealt at last years trade deadline.
  • The first period couldn’t have been any worse. Detroit was out shot 21-6 and somehow made it out only down by one goal. They had almost no offensive pressure in the first 20 minutes.
  • Carolina kept coming. The Wings got into some penalty trouble, resulting in a power-play goal for the opposition.
  • Positives from the 2nd period? The Canes were only held to 15 shots that period?
  • Okay, things got a little better towards the end of the 2nd. Anthony Mantha had a big hit on Jordan Martinook and started to create some momentum heading into the final frame.
  • Mantha has been struggling over the last few games. He was a little quiet tonight as well. If he wants to get out of Jeff Blashill’s doghouse he’ll have to start putting together some consistency.
  • In was more of the same in the third period until Andreas Athanasiou finished off a great feed from Thomas Vanek.
  • The tide started to turn as Detroit began to generate some high-danger scoring chances. Including this sequence where the Wings had not one… not two… but three golden opportunities to tie it. No dice.
  • Carolina added an empty-netter to cement a 3-1 win. The Wings late game push proved to be too little, too late.

Final Thoughts

It wasn’t a pretty game. For basically the first 40 minutes Detroit looked completely over-matched. They ended up being out shot 39-21.
However, this is how management has envisioned this season to go. The team will keep putting in the effort and try to maintain some competitiveness, while also taking the losses that come with a rebuild due to the lack of talent.
Detroit making things interesting at the end is how this will go.
