WINGS POST-GAME: Broadway bananza

5 years agoRed Wings and Rangers games from recent memory always seem to be classics. Most of the time, its brought to life by a goaltending between Jimmy Howard and Henrik Lundqvist. This one was a little different. Trailing 2-0 going into the third period, the Wings battled back with quality performances from their key guys. Detroit won 3-2 in overtime, in what could be the most exciting win for the club all season.
Worth Mentioning
- The first period was very uneventful. The Rangers out-shot the Wings 11-6, benefiting off a handful of Detroit turnovers. Jimmy Howard made a few big saves, and that was about it.
- Things started to heat up in the second period, beginning with some controversy. Michael Rasmussen muscled his way into a breakaway goal, which was disallowed due to a “hand-pass” The replay showed the Rangers were the first to touch the puck and play should have continued. They blew the call.
- A double-minor penalty late in the period would cost the Wings big time. The Rangers converted twice in each two minute frame. A deflating end to a pretty good period for Detroit.
- The comeback started off a Pavel Datsyuk like takeaway from Gustav Nyquist, than finding Justin Abdelkader all alone to get the home team on the board.
- The good times kept rolling. Andreas Athanasiou got Little Caesers alive with an electrifying goal to tie the game with 2 minutes left.
- To complete the comeback, Dylan Larkin finished off a dish from Athanasiou to win the game in overtime with 5 seconds left.
Final Thoughts
I would remember this one. In a game that was playing out like previous contests from this season, it turned into in an exciting comeback, lead by the team’s best players. In a season that will most likely have many low points, this was a nice breath of fresh air.
