Another day, another loss for the Detroit Red Wings. They have now lost seven of their last 10 games and are second-last in the Eastern Conference with a 28-32-11 record. Don’t worry, it’s almost over.
Tonight will be the fourth of five meetings between the Red Wings and Canadiens. Detroit has had a very difficult time scoring against Montreal this season, having tallied just two goals in three games. They were able to scrape out a 1-0 shutout win in their last meeting, but it has been tough sledding against the Canadiens for the most part.
The Red Wings have 11 games left on the schedule—tonight will be one of their five road games, leaving just six games at Joe Louis Arena. Their road record (14-16-6) is nearly identical to their home record (14-16-5) following last night’s defeat.

Changes could be forthcoming for the Red Wings after Ben Street was recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL) this morning. Street will likely replace Frans Nielsen in the lineup after Nielsen was banged up last night. Nielsen was able to finish the contest but was labouring after blocking a shot on the penalty kill. His inability to get back into the play ultimately led the Sabres’ game-winning goal.
It would be Street’s Red Wings debut and the veteran centre has earned the call-up after scoring 23 goals with 28 assists (51 points) in 57 games with the Griffins. The 30-year-old has just two assists in 29 career NHL games wth the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche.
Mike Green was the Red Wings best player last night by a noticeable margin and picked up an assist on their only goal, extending his point-streak to a modest three games. Green is tied for 11th among defensemen in goals (11) and tied for 35th in points (32).

The Canadiens are coming off of 4-1 win over the Senators on Sunday and have nine wins in their last 11 games. They will make one change from their winning lineup vs. Ottawa, getting Red Wings’ fourth line legend Steve Ott in the lineup for Michael McCarron.
Ott has one assist, five penalty minutes and four shots while averaging 12:06 TOI in his first six games since being traded to Montreal—and we thought Jeff Blashill played him a lot…
Shockingly, the Canadiens are being paced by Paul Byron right now. The speedy winger, who has a goal vs. Detroit this season, has six goals and two assists (eight points) in his last eight games. Their big guns have been relatively quiet as of late. Alex Galchenyuk hasn’t scored in eight games, Alexander Radulov has just two assists in his last six and Max Pacioretty has two goals and no assists in his last six.

Between the Pipes

Jimmy Howard will likely get the nod for Detroit after Petr Mrazek played yesterday. Howard has won two of his three starts since returning from injury, posting a 2.03 GAA and .924 SV% in the process. Howard has gone 3-3-0 with a 2.35 GAA and .922 SV% on the road this season and was yanked in his only start vs. Montreal—he allowed five goals on 25 shots in a 5-0 loss at Joe Louis Arena back in November.
The Red Wings catch a break tonight with Al Montoya getting the nod over Carey Price. Montoya has played fairly well as the Habs’ No.2 option, going 8-6-3 with a 2.72 GAA, .910 SV% and two shutouts in 17 games. Those numbers are a little skewed by his 10-0 loss in Columbus earlier in the season.
