WGD: GAME 50: RED WINGS @ HURRICANES

6 years agoThe Red Wings are coming off of a strong performance on Wednesday, beating the San Jose Sharks in a shootout. The Red Wings recorded a season-high 44 shots on Martin Jones before heading to the shootout and removing Jones’ jockstrap on several occasions.

It was a nice bounce-back performance from the Red Wings, who had a stinker before the All-Star break. Tonight they kick-off a weekend back-to-back in Carolina and will be in Florida tomorrow. This is the second of three meetings between the Red Wings and Hurricanes—Carolina won 3-1 win in Detroit on January 20th.

After a win, the Red Wings lineup is expected to remain the same tonight. It was a nice return to the lineup for Trevor Daley who scored the Red Wings’ lone goal with four shots and four blocked shots in 19:01 TOI. On the other hand, it wasn’t a great return for Darren Helm, who was mostly invisible outside of one breakaway. The problem was he missed the net by a mile on that breakaway and reminded fans how poor his hands are.

The Hurricanes recently got Sebastian Aho back in the lineup after missing four games a few weeks ago. Aho is second on the Hurricanes with 38 points (17G / 21A) behind his linemate Teuvo Teravainen’s 40 points (13G / 27A) in 51 games.
The Hurricanes like to spread out their lineup, which makes them difficult to matchup with—especially with the third line that features Jeff Skinner. Skinner has cooled down recently, scoring just one goal and one assist in his last seven games, but he’s on-pace for yet another 25-25 season.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Unsurprisingly, Petr Mrazek will be back in net for the Red Wings tonight. Mrazek stopped 31 of 32 shots in the shootout win on Wednesday. He has been nothing short of outstanding as of late, going 3-1-0 while allowing just five goals on 144 shots (.965 SV%) with two shutouts in his last five outings.
Hurricanes’ head coach Bill Peters did not announce who his starter will be tonight, but expect to see Cam Ward again. Peters rarely goes with the same goalie on back-to-back nights but Scott Darling has struggled mightily this season and Ward comes in playing well. Ward stopped all 27 shots that he faced in last night’s shutout win over the Canadiens.
