The Red Wings went into New Jersey last night and got the job done, shutting the Devils out 3-0 on the back of a 37-save performance from Petr Mrazek.

The Red Wings now return to Detroit for three straight games at Little Caesars Arena. The Red Wings will be in tough on the tail-end of a back-to-back with the Philadelphia Flyers in town. The Flyers have been hot as of late, winning three in a row and seven of their last eight while averaging 3.00 goals for per game.

The Red Wings returned Joe Hicketts and Dominic Turgeon to Grand Rapids (AHL) this afternoon, opening the door for Xavier Ouellet (healthy scratch) and Luke Glendening (hand) to return to the lineup.

Hicketts played well during his NHL debut but we are living out our worst nightmare—Hicketts and NHL-ready defensemen blocked by bad veteran contracts.

Gustav Nyquist had a busy night in New Jersey, firing five shots on goal but couldn’t buy a goal. On the other hand, the Red Wings’ second line was clicking and scored two of the three goals. Tyler Bertuzzi had his second goal in four games, Andreas Athanasiou’s two points gives him 11 (5G / 6A) in his last 10 games and going back to mid-December, Dylan Larkin has 15 points (4G / 11A) in his last 16 games.

The Flyers are still the same top-heavy team they’ve been for a number of years. Claude Giroux has had a fantastic season and comes into tonight tied for fourth in the NHL in points with 55 (14G / 41A) and Jakub Voracek’s 45 assists is first in the league.

On the back-end they are watching Ivan Provorov turn into a future Norris Trophy contender right in front of their eyes. Provorov has been heating up, scoring four goals and five assists (eight points) in his last eight games. He now sits just outside the top-25 in defenseman scoring this season with 24 points (9G / 15A) in 47 contests.

After an impressive shutout win last night, Mrazek will be back in the blue paint tonight. Mrazek has back-to-back shutouts, stopping all 64 shots that he faced in Chicago and New Jersey. It has been an up-and-down year for the 25-year-old netminder, who has gone 0-1-1 with a 4.51 GAA and .855 SV% on home-ice this season.

Brian Elliott starts for the Flyers. Elliott is coming off of a 27-save performance in an overtime win in Washington on Sunday but has been leaky recently. Despite allowing 16 goals on 140 shots (.886 SV%) in his last five starts, the Flyers’ offence has carried him to a 4-1-0 record during that stretch.
