On Tuesday the Red Wings were finally able to snap their losing streak, ending the skid at seven games. During that stretch the Red Wings were outscored 36-to-14 but those numbers are a little bit skewed because of the 10-1 ass whooping they took in Montreal.
The Red Wings were able to defeat the Winnipeg Jets, who came into Tuesday’s game tied for first in the NHL and things won’t get any easier this afternoon. The Red Wings will welcome the St. Louis Blues to Little Caesars Arena and the Blues are now ahead of the Jets for first place in the Central Division and just two points back of the Tampa Bay Lightning for first overall.
St. Louis comes in on a two-game winning streak and as the seventh highest scoring team in the league. Their special teams have been underwhelming, but they are one of the best 5on5 teams in the league as they sit tied for sixth with 60 even-strength goals in 29 games—Detroit is 23rd with 50.
It will certainly be a tough test but let’s see how these two teams stack up:

THE RED WINGS

The Red Wings aren’t expected to make many changes to their winning lineup, but Tyler Bertuzzi was recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL) yesterday and is expected to replace David Booth on the fourth line—Booth is battling an undisclosed injury.
After missing the start of the season with an injury, Bertuzzi has picked up nine points (5G / 4A) in 12 games with the Griffins last season. He was able to pick up where he left off as last year’s AHL playoff hero and he will be looking to translate that into NHL success. Bertuzzi is the type of hardworking player that is hard to take out of the lineup, so if he plays well today and in the near future, don’t be surprised if he is here to stay—he is probably the main reason the Red Wings didn’t mind trading away Scott Wilson last week.
As for the rest of the lineup, Justin Abdelkader has surprisingly been one of the hottest forwards on this team recently, scoring three goals with six assists (nine points) in his last 10 games. On the other side of Henrik Zetterberg is Gustav Nyquist, who has elevated his game recently as well. Following a three-point game vs. Winnipeg, Nyqusit now has three goals and four assists (seven points) in his last 10.

THE BLUES

For the majority of the year so far the Blues stacked their top line with Jaden SchwartzBrayden SchennVladimir Tarasenko, but recently broke the trio up in an effort to make their lineup more balanced. Broken up or not, that trio along with defensman Alex Pietrangelo have carried the Blues so far this season.
After being acquired from Philadelphia this offseason, Schenn is tied with Schwartz for the team lead and eighth overall in points (34) through 29 games. Tarasenko isn’t far behind with 30 points (13G / 17A) and all three of them have at least 13 goals. As for Pietranglo, becoming the No.1 offensive option following the departure of Kevin Shattenkirk has opened up a whole new Pietrangelo. Dating back to the Shattenkirk trade last season, Pietrangelo leads all defensemen in goals (12), second in points (39), tied for second in PPG (4), fourth in shots (142) and tied for fifth in power-play points (14).
That trade also allowed Colton Parayko to take on a bigger role and he has thrived as of late. Parayko is tied for 22nd among defensemen in points (16) this season but 11 of those points (2G / 9A) have come in his last 11 games.

BETWEEN THE PIPES

Jimmy Howard vs. Jake Allen.
Howard was excellent in the Red Wings win over Winnipeg, stopping 25 of 26 shots in the contest. Howie made a number of huge saves that really gave the Red Wings a chance at snapping that losing streak. Overall, he hasn’t been great at Little Caesars Arena, posting a 3.01 GAA and .902 SV% for a 5-5-3 record in the new building.
Allen is coming off of a 29-save shutout in a win over the Stars on Thursday. After losing three in a row last week, Allen has rebounded to stop 49 of the last 52 shots (.942 SV%) that he has faced. However, Allen has been much better on home ice, which is generally the case with most goalies, but he comes into this afternoon’s game at 6-3-2 with a 2.87 GAA and. 901 SV% in 11 road games.
