WGD: GAME 13: RED WINGS VS. COYOTES
By Brock Seguin
6 years agoThanks to a stellar performance from Jimmy Howard, the Red Wings were able to snap their six-game losing skid in Florida on Saturday.
They finished their three-game road-trip at 1-2-0 and now return to Little Caesars Arena for a one-game home stand before departing for a four-game Canadian roadie (OTT, EDM, VAN, CGY). By October 10th, the Red Wings will have had played just five of their first 17 games on home-ice. After that, they will play 13 of their next 15 games in Detroit.
Tonight they will host the Arizona Coyotes, their second and final meeting of the season. They played in Arizona 19 days ago and the Red Wings won 4-2, led by Dylan Larkin and Mike Green who each had two assists. The Coyotes nearly had the worst start in NHL history, but were able to bring their losing streak to a halt last night, giving them one win in their first 12 games. Let’s see how these two squads match-up.

Jeff Blashill put Larkin on line with Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou recently and so far, so good. The sample size is small, they’ve only play 11:10 TOI together at 5v5, but the young trio carries a 68.18 CF% and they combined for a goal in Saturday’s win. They are clearly the Red Wings most exciting line, but the Gustav Nyquist–Henrik Zetterberg–Tomas Tatar line has been steady as well. Early on, they have a 51.35 CF%, but have only scored three even-strength goals in 78:44 TOI.
On the blueline, it was announced on Monday that Danny DeKeyser will miss 10-to-21 more days, leaving the current six intact. However, with DeKeyser out for the entire Canadian road-trip, the Red Wings could call-up an extra defenseman, likely Joe Hicketts. The 21-year-old, who impressed in training camp, has three assists in nine games with Grand Rapids (AHL) so far this season.

It has been a tough start to the season for the Coyotes, but there have been some bright spots. Rookie Clayton Keller has been on a tear since the puck was dropped, collecting eight goals and five assists (13 points) in the first 12 games. Keller has played primarily on a line with Max Domi, who is second on the team in points with nine (1G / 8A) and Derek Stepan who has seven points (2G / 5A) since coming over from the Rangers this offseason.
On the back-end, the Coyotes are led by Oliver Ekman-Larsson who has one goal and six assists so far and your average fan may look at his minus-12 rating and say he’s been terrible. However, the Swedish blueliner has a 55.3 CF% and a ridiculous 9.0 relative Corsi. He is still the best player on the team the Red Wings’ will need to keep a close eye on him in this one.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Howard vs. Scott Wedgewood.
Howard turned away 44 of 46 shots in the Red Wings’ shootout win on Saturday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Howie, who now ranks ninth in the NHL in SV% (.929). He started the first game vs. the Coyotes and stopped 33 of 35 shots in the the victory.
Wedgewood made his Coyotes debut last night after being acquired via trade from New Jersey over the weekend. Wedgewood stopped 28 of 31 shots to earn the win in Philadelphia. With Antti Raanta (lower-body) still sidelined, Wedgewood will start on back-to-back nights. This should bode well for the Red Wings.
