Coming off a big time victory against Montreal on Tuesday, the Red Wings are back for another Atlantic Division matchup. The Ottawa Senators are in town on a miserable five game losing streak. Their last win came on Dec. 23, which is also their only regulation win in a month.

These two teams sit in the bottom-3 of league standings (Detroit 11-30-3, Ottawa 16-22-5), so this game has appropriately been dubbed the Tank Bowl.

Sticking together is the second line of Adam Erne, Valtteri Filppula, and Filip Zadina. The trio played a solid game on Tuesday, producing the game winning goal with four minutes to play. Adam Erne might have played his best game as a Red Wing.

Speaking of strong performances, the first line played an even better game. The comeback against Montreal got started when the three produced an early third period goal. An important sign to see, as the team will need to get as much as they can out of the top-6 with Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou still out.

One of the upbringing stories of this otherwise dreary Senators lineup has been Anthony Duclair. The 24-year-old is enjoying an on-pace-for 30 goal breakout season. Currently with 21 on the season, Duclair ranks 13th in the league. Standout pivot Jean-Gabriel Pageau is T-18th with 19 goals.

And, of course, on the back-end is Thomas Chabot. Head coach DJ Smith has not been shy to deploy his superstar defenseman, posting some mind-numbing TOI stats. Back in mid-December, Chabot played over 30 minutes in four straight games, including 37:50 minutes back on Dec. 17.

Detroit and Ottawa have already met twice this season, with the Senators prevailing in both contests. The first coming on Oct. 23, which ended in a 5-2 Ottawa win. Anders Nilsson made 34 of 36 saves, being the key to victory. Luckily for Detroit, backup goaltender Marcus Hogberg is starting tonight. In seven games this season, Hogberg has posted a poor .984 save percentage.

The next matchup came on Nov. 19, resulting in a 4-3 Ottawa win as well. Nilsson once again was sensational, stopping 35 of 38 shots. If Detroit wants to return the favor tonight, they’ll have a prime opportunity to do so with Nilsson not starting.

Filip Zadina had his shining moment with the game winning goal against Montreal on Tuesday. As we all know, Zadina will be linked to the teams that passed on him at the 2018 NHL Draft because of his comments made afterwards. Weather he was serious or not about his “I’m going to fill their nets with pucks” remark, the fans surely have grasped on to his revenge tour.

Like Montreal, Ottawa was one of the teams that went a different direction on draft day, opting to select power forward Bardy Tkachuk. With goals in back-to-back games, Zadina is starting to find his stride and can certainly carry that momentum into tonight’s game.

Thomas Chabot is a horse. The minutes he is logging is astronomical for a below-average team in December-January. While Ottawa’s other five D-men aren’t that reliable, you still have to wonder how smart it is to have Chabot playing 30 minutes a game in a lost season.
