WATCH: Suter deposits Fabbri’s feed for first goal in a Red Wings sweater

Detroit Red Wings off-season acquisition Pius Suter scored his team’s only goal in a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

Suter, who only turned 25 in May, is entering just his second NHL season after spending his rookie campaign with the Chicago Blackhawks. He signed a two-year deal worth $3.25 million per season with the Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent after curiously not being qualified by Chicago as a pending RFA with arbitration rights.

Detroit lost by a 5-1 score on Sunday afternoon. The Red Wings noticeably struggled on the defensive side of the puck and surrendered 2.8 expected goals at 5-on-5 (according to Natural Stat Trick) while generating 1.61 of their own.

With the Red Wings in a 2-0 hole late in the first period, Pittsburgh took two penalties in quick succession to give Detroit a 5-on-3 power play. Suter was able to take advantage of a nice set-up by Robby Fabbri and scored his first goal of the pre-season from the right side of Tristan Jarry’s net to cut the Penguins’ lead to 2-1.

Suter scored 14 goals and 27 points in 55 games during his rookie season with Chicago in 2020–21. He’ll likely occupy the center spot on Detroit’s second line in 2021–22, potentially continuing to play on a unit with Fabbri.
