The Grand Rapids Griffins hosted their first Esports Night on Sunday at Van Andel Arena. A pool of 18 players competed in EA Sports’ NHL 20 on PS4 and XBox One.
After losing my first game in the double-elimination tournament, I managed to navigate the field and reach the championship game.
In the title game, I won the first game, forcing a second winner-take-all game but fell just short of completing the upset, losing to Shane Haggerty, who hadn’t lost a game coming into the championship match.
For reaching the championship game, Haggerty and I were invited to compete in a shootout during the first intermission of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ game against the San Antonio Rampage.
You can watch the video below.

After a shaky start, I got some redemption from Haggerty with a 3-2 shootout win.
Overhearing Griffins staff during the tournament, it sounds like there will be more tournaments in the future, so you’ll have an opportunity to show off your skills on the sticks if you are in the Grand Rapids area.
