Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 1981 (Dec. 2), the Detroit Red Wings acquired Danny Gare and others from the Buffalo Sabres. While Gare became the centerpiece of the deal, Detroit also acquired Jim Schoenfeld and Derek Smith.
In return, the Wings gave up Mike Foligno, Dale McCourt, and Brent Peterson.
Gare, then 27, went on to be a staple of the mid-80’s Red Wings. Over five years wearing the winged wheel, Gare scored 86 goals and 181 points in 306 games that included a 61 point campaign in 79 games during the 1982-83 season.
Schoenfeld only spent parts of two seasons with Detroit scoring six goals and 25 points in 96 games before he signed in Boston as a free agent in 1983. Smith also appeared in only parts of two seasons in Detroit, scoring 13 goals and 31 points in 91 games.
Foligno became a staple in Buffalo playing there for another 10 years scoring 511 points in 664 games while McCourt played parts of three seasons and Peterson parts of four years. The latter two provided solid depth offence while there.
