Throwback Thursday: On this day in 1988, Detroit Red Wings Petr Klima becomes first player in club history to score penalty shot goal in playoffs

On this day in 1988, Petr Klima became the first Detroit Red Wings player to score a penalty shot goal in the playoffs. Klima added a second goal and an assist in what was a 6-3 win in game three of the Norris Division semi-finals against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Klima, 23 at the time, had one of his best regular seasons that year scoring 37 goals and 62 points in 78 games. In the playoffs, he added a whopping 10 goals and 18 points in only 12 games.

Drafted by the Red Wings in the fifth round fo the 1983 draft, the native of Czechslovakia broke into the league in 1985-86 scoring 32 goals and 56 points in 74 games with the Wings.

Klima stayed with the Wings until 1989, when on November 2nd he was traded alongside Adam Graves, Joe Murphy and Jeff Sharples in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Kevin McClelland and a 1991 5th round pick.

After his stint in Edmonton, he spent seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning, LA Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins before returning to retire a Red Wing in 1999.
