Three more Red Wings named to play at IIHF World Championships

Three more Red Wings will be getting a late start to the Summer, with the announcement of Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi committing to Team Canada, as well as Filip Hronek for the Czech national team to play at the 2019 IIHF world championships coming Monday morning.

They join Dylan Larkin and Luke Glendening, who last week confirmed they will be competing for the U.S. national team alongside Jeff Blashill and Dan Blysma, as representatives for Detroit in Slovakia.

Having two members of Team Canada is something the Red Wings organization hasn’t seen in a long time. The last time they had a representative playing for the Great White North was Kyle Quincey in 2012. Quincey registered zero points in 6 games that year for Team Canada, so its been awhile since Detroit has had a prominent fixture for them.

Bertuzzi is coming off the best season of his career, notching 20 goals and emerging as a key piece of the future. Mantha also hit the 20 goal mark, coming in back-to-back seasons.

While both players have shown promise in the NHL, they will both most likely serve a middle-six wingers in this tournament, seeing as Canada boasts star wingers Mark Stone and Jonathan Marchessault to start things off. They will only be adding to this roster once teams start to be eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Hronek on the other could be one of the Czech Republic’s most important players. He got valuable NHL experience late in the season, and that will help make his case on a roster that is lacking in pro North American talent. Other names to keep an eye on for this nation include Filip Zadina and Libor Sulak, with no word on what their status is for joining the national team.
