This week in hockey history sees the birth of plenty of future Hockey Hall of Famers and significant trades and signings. Here’s what happened the week of July 6-12 in hockey history: 

July 11, 1963: Former Flames defenceman, Al MacInnis was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia. The Flames selected MacInnis 15th overall in the 1981 Draft and he would later help them to their first and only Stanley Cup victory, where he would also win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.

July 8, 1995: Jarome Iginla was drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 1995 Draft. He would be traded to the Flames before making his NHL debut when the Stars trade him for the rights to Joe Nieuwendyk on December 19, 1995. He would make his debut with the Flames in the 1996 playoffs when his WHL season with the Kamloops Blazers wrapped up.

July 9, 1927: Red Kelly was born in Simcoe, Ontario. Kelly helped the Leafs win a Stanley Cup in 1962, ’63, ’64, and ’67. He would retire after the 1967 Championship with 823 points (281 G, 542 A) and would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.

July 6, 1930: George Armstrong, captain of four of the Leafs Stanley Cup winning teams in the 1960s, is born in Skead, Ontario. Armstrong retires in 1971 with 773 points (322 G and 451 A) in 1,297 games. He’s inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.

July 12, 1957: Two-time Stanley Cup champion Dave Semenko was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Oilers’ enforcer passed away only 13 days before his 60th birthday after a short battle with liver and pancreatic cancer.

July 12, 1982: The Red Wings introduce Jim Devellano as GM. He would serve as the GM until 1990 and lead the team to four Stanley Cup championships and six Presidents’ Trophies. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

July 10, 1957: The Red Wings trade John Bucyk to the Boston Bruins to reacquire goaltender Terry Sawchuk for the first time. He would later be reacquired by the Red Wings again from the Kings in 1968. Sawchuk would spend a total of 14 seasons with the Red Wings.

July 9 ,1927: Red Kelly was born in Simcoe, Ontario. Kelly won eight Stanley Cups in his career (four with the Leafs and four with the Red Wings). He would help the Red Wings to Stanley Cup victories in 1950, ’52, ’54 and ’55. Kelly is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.

July 8, 1992: The Red Wings sign 37-year-old Mark Howe, the son of Gordie Howe. He spends three seasons with the Red Wings and retires in 1995. He joins his father in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.

July 6, 1983: The Red Wings signed now GM Ken Holland as a goaltender. He would play only three games with Detroit (three of only four games played in the NHL) and fourteen years later would become General Manager of the Red Wings, going on to win the Stanley Cup three times.
