Having missed the playoffs for three straight seasons the Detroit Red Wings will be looking to get back on the road to respectability under new general manager Steve Yzerman in the upcoming campaign, but they’ve still been listed near the bottom of the opening 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Detroit, coming off a 32-40-10 season, sits well back at +6600 (wager $100 to win $6600) on the odds to win the 2020 Stanley Cup at sportsbooks. That has them tied for 29th place on those futures with the Anaheim Ducks, with only the Ottawa Senators (+10000) below them.
The Red Wings’ 74 points this past season had them 24 points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, and just 10 points ahead of the Senators for last place in those standings. Detroit had 73 and 79 points the prior two years.
Yzerman inherits a roster that includes a pair of 30-goal scorers from this past season in Dylan Larkin (32 goals, 73 points) and Andreas Athanasiou (30 goals, 54 points) but is also tied up in multi-year contracts to forwards Frans Nielsen, Justin Abdelkader, and Darren Helm along with defenseman Danny DeKeyser. Long-time Red Wings blueliner Niklas Kronwall is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer after turning in a 27-point season.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard is set for at least one more season between the pipes for the Red Wings after he signed a one-year, $4 million contract extension back in March. Howard had sub-par numbers in 2018/19 with a 3.07 GAA and .909 save percentage in his 55 games.
The Red Wings finished 54 points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division standings this past season, and the Bolts opened as the +800 betting favorites on the 2020 Stanley Cup odds. The Vegas Golden Knights and Boston Bruins sit tied for second at +900 on those NHL odds, while the Toronto Maple Leafs hold down fourth on the list at +1000.
The St. Louis Blues (+1200), Colorado Avalanche (+1200), San Jose Sharks (+1600), Washington Capitals (+1600), and Winnipeg Jets (+1600) round out the top of the futures.
