Sheahan will try to avoid making history Wednesday

Riley Sheahan has not scored a goal in 62 games this season and with 18 games left, he is on pace for one of the most futile seasons in NHL history.

On Wednesday, he has a chance to become a part of history, but not the type of history you want to be remembered for. 658 players have scored a goal this season, but Sheahan is still searching for his first. He is one of nine players this season to have 40-plus shots and no goals. The other players on that list are: Luke Schenn (77), Marc Methot (64), Brooks Orpik (63), Nikita Zadorov (61), Brian Dumoulin (58), Brendan Gaunce (51), Niklas Kronwall (42) and Derek Grant (40)—not really a who’s who of offensive dynamos.

In 1967-68 the NHL started tracking player shot totals and Sheahan is headed towards history. If Sheahan records two shots he will have the most shots on goal by a forward without scoring a goal in a season in NHL history.

Sheahan is currently second on that list, one shot behind Craig Adams, who definitely wasn’t known for his offensive prowess. Adams scored just 55 goals in 951 career NHL games or 4.7 goals per 82 games. However, one goal and Sheahan takes his name off this list, but if he fails to score in the final month of the year it will go down as one of the worst seasons ever.
