Red Wings Year in Review: The Castoffs

It’s time to shine the spotlight on some of the Detroit Red Wings players who didn’t get their fair share of attention this season.

Whether they weren’t in the lineup because of an injury, or they were just in the minors for most of the season, the castoffs are a collection of players who saw very limited ice time this season.

Without further ado, let’s take a brief look at all of the Detroit Red Wings castoffs.

Tangradi, a free agent pick up last year, wasn’t really intended to play much for the Red Wings, but more provide a bit of size down in Grand Rapids. He did more that, as he put up 28 goals and 28 assists for 56 points in 72 games, and 5 points in 7 playoff games. He got a chance to play for the Wings on Jan. 25 against the New York Islanders, which ended up being a 4-2 win for the Wings. Tangradi saw very little action, only playing 6:55 in the game, with a strong 66.15% 5v5 CF. He’s locked up for two more years, so we’ll see how many more chances he gets with Detroit.

Nosek played six games with the Red Wings this season, with very little contribution. He put up no points, was a -2, took a penalty, and only took two shots, while averaging 10:08 over the six games. During that span, Nosek had a 51.62% 5v5 CF. The Wings went 3-3 during the stretch with him in the lineup. In the AHL, he had 30 points in 70 games, as well as a goal in 9 playoff games.

In a rare situation, Ferraro only saw a limited amount of time because he was claimed on waivers by the Boston Bruins, so he only played 10 games with the Red Wings. In those 10 games, he was pointless, a -3, and had 7 penalty minutes, along with 12 shots on goal. Analytically, he was a brutal 36.53% CF. With the Boston Bruins, he put up 5 goals and 5 assists in 58 games.

Franzen was a very unfortunate situation this season. He started the season with the team, putting up an assist on the power play and three shots, and a 49.32% 5v5 CF, he suffered from continued concussion issues that he dealt with for a good chunk of the previous season. Despite a contract that doesn’t expire until 2020, he probably won’t play again.

Like Ferraro, Kindl wasn’t a player who rarely played due to injury or minors, it was because he was traded to the Florida Panthers. Even then, he played the most games out of the bunch, so a much better sample size. In 25 games, he scored two goals, and dished out four assists. He was a +3, had 37 shots, and had a 55.22% 5v5 CF. In 19 games with the Panthers, he had just 2 assists, but was a +10, took 26 shots, and had a 55.1% 5v5 CF. He was a regular in the press box for Detroit when he was here, but unlike Ferraro, they got an asset in a sixth round pick for him.

Ouellet was a player that spent most of the season in the minors, playing just 5 games for the Red Wings. In those five games, he had an assist, but was a -2. He took only four shots, and had a 48.39% 5v5 CF. In the minors, he put up a solid 29 points in 61 games, as well as 4 points in 9 playoff games. Look for him to get more ice time next season, as he is now eligible for waivers, and will probably make the big club if the team doesn’t want to lose him for nothing (or they’ll trade him).
