With the 97th overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft, the Red Wings have selected Ethan Phillips, a center from the USHL. Phillips came over midseason to play for the Sioux Falls Stampede and showcased his speedy style of game. He isn’t big by any means — standing at just 5’9” — so this is one of those bets on skill level.
I personally preferred Phillips teammate, Jami Krannila, but Detroit stills adds a similar prospect. Phillips is a Boston University commit. The other Red Wings draft pick from the USHL — Robert Mastrosimone — is BU bound as well. Another connection Phillips shares with Detroit is his family was the billet family for Filip Zadina during his time with Halifax.
In 50 games with the Stampede Phillips produced 16 goals and 43 points. Prior to joining Sioux Falls he played prep hockey in New England. The transition to the USHL certainly helped his draft stock. He would play a key role in helping Sioux Falls capture the USHL championship.
