With the 159th overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft the Red Wings have selected forward Elmer Soderblom. Soderblom is a Swedish-born player with so much raw potential. I can’t think of a bigger project from this draft. There is a lot of work to do here but he has potential.
Coming in at 6’7” and 220 lbs, Soderblom is a big man who can more pretty well for his size. He has some sneaky good puck skills in front of the net. He played this past season in the Frolunda system where he registered 9 goals and 17 points in 44 SuperElit games. I can recall him being considered a late first round caliber player to start the season. An iffy draft year, combined with the need of serious development to realize his potential is ultimately why Soderblom fell to the 6th round.
This now makes three Swedish-born players selected by the Wings in the 2019 NHL draft.
