The next member of the Red Wings 2019 NHL draft class is Swedish forward Albin Grewe. The Wings used their first pick of the third round, 66th overall, to land Grewe. He comes from the Djurgarden system, having played mainly in the Swedish junior league. He did, however, have a 15 game stint in the SHL in which he was rendered pointless. In SuperElit he amassed 13 goals and 34 points in 25 games.
That makes for back-to-back years the Red Wings take a high scoring Swedish winger in the top-75 of the draft, having selected Jonatan Berggren 33rd overall in the 2018 NHL draft. Interesting to note is this is already the second Swede taken by Detroit. During his nine-year run in Tampa Bay, Steve Yzerman only selected one Swedish-born player. Very telling that Tyler Wright is primarily running the show.
Grewe plays a tenacious, skilled type of game. He can be aggravating to play against, receiving comparison to Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins. The type of player you love if they’re on your team and hate if they’re not. But Grewe can also make plays with his dangerous speed.
