The Red Wings announced Sunday morning they’ve re-sign forward Matt Puempel to a two-year contract. Specifics on the new deal have yet to be released.
Detroit acquired Puempel via trade from the New York Rangers early last season in exchange for Ryan Sproul. Sproul is now an unrestricted free-agent, so its safe to say Detroit got the better end of the deal.
Upon joining the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Essex, Ontario native recorded an impressive 54 points in 57 games. That was good enough to send him to the AHL all-star game. Now at 25 years-old, Puempel is locked down for two more years and will provide nice depth for Grand Rapids. The odds of him actually making the Red Wings is slim to zero, which means he’ll have to go though waivers to head to the AHL.
That wraps it up for off-season maintenance and the team should be ready to go for the upcoming season.
