After a lackluster effort against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday — save for maybe Jimmy Howard — the Detroit Red Wings went back to 11 forwards and seven defensemen, with Scott Wilson being a healthy scratch as they attempted to change their luck against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena.
However, the Canadiens potted six goals in a 6-3 win, as Detroit fell to 0-3-3 in its past six games.

THE RUNDOWN

Just over two minutes into the first period, Luke Glendening was called for hooking, putting the Canadiens on the power play. With three seconds left in the aforementioned power play, Max Pacioretty, wristed a shot that was deflected by Brendan Gallagher to give the Canadiens the early 1-0 lead.
But the Red Wings quickly answered, just 1:14 later, as Anthony Mantha’s shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle was inadvertently deflected by Victor Mete to tie the game at 1-1.
The Red Wings continued to apply pressure, especially on the penalty kill, where Dylan Larkin had a few opportunities to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.
However, it would be Tomas Tatar to give the Red Wings their first lead of the game at the 15:43 mark of the first. After a give and go with Gustav Nyquist, Tatar snapped a shot past Carey Price with Justin Abdelkader providing a nice screen.
The Red Wings ended the first period with a 21-11 lead in shot attempts (11-7 at 5 on 5), and a 13-6 lead in shots (9-4 at 5 on 5).
About five minutes into the second period, the Canadiens tied the game at 2-2. Gallagher made a strong move to the front of the net, Howard made the save, but Charles Hudon scored on the rebound.
Less than a minute later, Phillip Danault picked up a loose puck after Abdelkader couldn’t handle, flipped a pass to Andrew Shaw, who roofed it to give the Canadiens a 3-2 lead.
With about two minutes left in the second, Alex Galchenuk picked up a rebound and beat Howard to give the Canadiens a 4-2 lead.
The teams played a fairly even second period, as the Canadiens edged the Red Wings 20-19 in shot attempts during the second (18-14 at 5 on 5) and held a 13-9 advantage in shots (12-7 at 5 on 5).
Around the midway point of the third period, Gallagher got his second goal, again off a deflection, as he deflected a point shot from Jeff Petry to extend the Canadiens’ lead to 5-2.
The Canadiens weren’t done, as Howard attempted to cover a loose puck in the crease, but Jonathan Ericsson inadvertently knocked the puck into his own net, giving the Canadiens a 6-2 lead.
The Red Wings got one back, as Frans Nielsen buried a rebound on the power play to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Red Wings held a 17-10 advantage in shot attempts in the third (16-8 at 5 on 5) and a 9-6 lead in shots (8-4 at 5 on 5).

THE STATS
