Red Wings postgame: Felted by Vegas

6 years agoAfter nearly completing a come-from-behind attempt against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, the Red Wings hosted Tomas Tatar and the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, looking to complete the series sweep after beating Vegas 6-3 on Oct. 13.
However, Lady Luck (or any semblance of skill) was not on the Red Wings’ side, as they fell 4-0 to the Golden Knights.
THE RUNDOWN
The Golden Knights jumped all over the Red Wings from the opening faceoff, as Alex Tuch intercepted a Niklas Kronwall pass and beat Jimmy Howard short side to give Vegas the early 1-0 lead.
The Red Wings pushed back in the first period and had some prime scoring chances, but the score stood at 1-0 after 20 minutes. The Red Wings outattempted the Golden Knights 17-15 (16-11 at 5 on 5) and were outshot 11-9 (10-9 at 5 on 5).
The teams traded opportunities in the second period. About midway through the second frame, the Red Wings went on the power play, but a terrible line change by Mike Green after a turnover by Anthony Mantha led to a 2 on 0, and Cody Eakin beat Howard for the 2-0 lead.
About seven minutes later, Eakin got his second goal of the game, as the Golden Knights played keep away in the offensive zone until Eakin found a lane to snipe a shot short side.
Less than a minute later, Tuch got his second goal of the game, as he collected his own rebound and used a plethora of Red Wings as a screen to beat Howard high on the blocker side.
The Golden Knights outattempted the Red Wings 25-20 (17-16 at 5 on 5) in the second period and outshot them 14-12 (tied 10-10 at 5 on 5).
The Red Wings had a few scoring opportunities in the third period, but Marc-Andre Fleury stood tall, stopping all 28 shots in the game.
The Red Wings outattempted the Golden Knights 14-13 (tied 9-9 at 5 on 5) in the third period and were outshot 7-6 (tied 5-5 at 5 on 5).
THE STATS
This was one of the worst Red Wings game this season. The Golden Knights made the Red Wings look like the expansion team, using their speed to create scoring chances and cycle the puck in the offensive zone.
This one was over early, and the Golden Knights never let up to give the Red Wings a shot of getting back in this one.
As the chart shows, the shot attempts were pretty even, but this game wasn’t at all close.
MOTOR CITY MVP
Not really sure who to give the Motor City MVP to, as this was a pretty bad team effort. If I have to choose one player, I guess it would be Dylan Larkin. He was one of the only players to show some sort of effort. He had five shots and used his speed and quickness to individually kill time off a couple of penalties.
Honorable mention: Nick Jensen led the team with seven shots and a 61.29 5 on 5 shot attempts percentage.
