About nine minutes later, Justin Abdelkader stole the puck from Matt Niskanen and showed some sick moves, deking Braden Holtby and tying the game at 1-1.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie, as the Capitals led 18-16 in shot attempts (Red Wings led 15-10 at 5 on 5) and led 8-6 in shots (Red Wings led 6-5 at 5 on 5).

The Red Wings dominated the second period but had nothing to show for it until an onslaught of three goals in the final three minutes of the period.

After some poor rebound control by Holtby, Glendening picked up the loose puck and gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.

Just nine seconds later, Henrik Zetterberg stripped Niskanen of the puck from behind the net and found a wide-open Anthony Mantha for the 3-1 lead.

As the second period wind down, Dylan Larkin intercepted a pass, dropped a pass to Tomas Tatar while driving the net, and Tatar wristed a shot over Holtby’s glove to give Detroit a 4-1 lead.

The Red Wings outattempted the Capitals 30-5 in the second period (24-5 at 5 on 5) and outshot them 17-2 (14-2 at 5 on 5).

The Capitals came out hot in the third period, as Brett Connolly took a Jay Beagle pass in the slot and beat Jimmy Howard to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Capitals kept the pressure on throughout the third period. At the 14:02 mark, Dmitry Orlov executed a nice give-and-go with Devante Smith-Pelly to cut the Red Wings’ lead to 4-3.

With less than two minutes remaining, Danny DeKeyser took a holding call to put the Capitals on the 6-on-4 power play. And, for the second time in as many games, the Red Wings blew a three-goal lead, as Nicklas Backstrom wristed a shot past Howard from the top of the right faceoff circle to tie the game at 4-4.

The Capitals outattempted the Red Wings 24-10 in the third period (18-9 at 5 on 5) and outshot them 15-5 (14-4 at 5 on 5).

Despite coming into overtime with a 1-8 record, the Red Wings came out with a win, as Larkin made a nice pass to Tatar, who pulled the puck back against the grain in the crease to beat Holtby for the 5-4 overtime win.
