Red Wings Not Qualifying Martin Frk

The Red Wings will not be qualifying restricted free agent Martin Frk, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. However the option to bring him back as an unrestricted free agent is still on the table.

Essentially, Detroit is still debating weather or not they want to bring the twenty-four year old back for another season, but it won’t be as an RFA. If they were to qualify him the most likely scenario would lead to Frk utilizing his arbitration rights. At that point, it wouldn’t make sense for the Wings. They would end up paying him much more than $715,000, which isn’t ideal at all for a streaky fourth-liner when other players are in the system.

His only real purpose is the trigger-man on the powerplay. Yet Detroit was still one of the worst units when on the man-advantage. He has one of the hardest shots in the league, but would fail to even hit a soccer net.

If the club would still like retain him, they could sign him as a UFA (which can only be done by not qualifying him). Than they can find a more reasonable salary. Only problem is Frk is free to do what ever he wants. It’s up to him at that point where he wants to go – Dallas was a rumored destination for him connection to Todd Nelson.

Detroit surely can replace him with more effective players. Evgeny Svechnikov and Dominic Turgeon being the most likely candidates.
