Two days after being blown out 11-2 by the Pittsburgh Penguins, unfortunately, the Detroit Red Wings’ goaltending situation remains in flux as both @Thomas Greiss and @Calvin Pickard are still unavailable.
Following Tuesday’s practice, coach Jeff Blashill confirmed that neither Greiss nor Pickard will play Wednesday when the New York Rangers visit Little Caesars Arena. As a result, the team is expected to promote a goaltender to backup @Alex Nedeljkovic.
On a positive note, Blashill did reveal that defensemen @Marc Staal (undisclosed) and @Danny DeKeyser (undisclosed) could return to the lineup Wednesday.
Greiss, 36, departed last Thursday’s contest against the New York Islanders due to an upper-body injury and has been sidelined ever since then. In 25 games this season, he’s performed to an 8-11-1 record, a 3.79 goals-against average and a .885 save percentage.
As for Pickard, 29, the veteran netminder exited during the third period of Sunday’s tilt in Pittsburgh with an undisclosed injury. Splitting time between the NHL and AHL, he’s made a trio of appearances with the Red Wings in 2021-22, registering a 1-1-1 record, a 4.30 goals-against average and a .875 save percentage.
In all likelihood, @Kaden Fulcher will probably be recalled by Detroit ahead of Wednesday’s contest as he served on the club’s taxi squad earlier this season.
Across his 19 games with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL, Fulcher, 23, owns a 10-7-0 record, a 2.46 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
The Red Wings will open a two-game homestand against the Rangers on Wednesday, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 pm ET.
