With the 137th pick overall, the Red Wings have selected Jordan Sambrook in the 5th round.
The solid defenceman from Markham, Ontario was ranked 96th by NHL Central Scouting going into the draft. He spent last season with the OHL’s Erie Otters where in his first year he notched a respectable 27 points in 67 games. More size for the Wings at 6’2″ and 187lbs as they opt for another right-handed guy with Sambrook.
Praised for a well-rounded skill set, plays well without the puck and is dependable in his own end. Scouts like his creativity with the puck and with a potential offensive upside, Sambrook looks like a player who could ease into a dependable all-around guy in the NHL. For now though, lots of time for this kid to develop and hone in his game in the OHL.
We’ll be back in the 6th round with Detroit’s next selection.
